Its been an interesting week of news for VoIP with Skype releasing a hardware solution, China and security experts warning against skype and the buzz for ATA / Hardware based Voip just keeps getting bigger.
Voip Choice doesn't include Skype as an Australian VoIP provider (read the FAQ to find out why) but as an alternative to hardware based VoIP offerings and the effect it has on the deployment of the application, its hard to ignore.
To put it simply, a government such as China that seeks to control much of its media and telecommunications, VoIP is a interesting new technology that seems to be raising some eyebrows from the powers that be. While VoIP gateways can exist on the already heavily firewalled and controlled Chinese networks, Skype is managed via european and global servers which, like google and yahoo, are out of China's direct control.
Ironically Verso, an American company has begun trials of their "Netspective" filters to block skype traffic. Not only does this reduce China's own capacity to utilize this technology, or even capitalize on its use, but it means functionality for Skype globally is severely impacted, unless of course you don't call China.
No sooner were tech analysts processing this new development when we hear that Skype is selling "Starter Kits" including a USB headset and 30 minutes of phone usage on the network. It will be interesting to see how this offering goes, however this kind of tech has been around for a while, just not packaged and branded this way.
Its worth mentioning here so as to keep you all informed, that Skype, Google Talk and Hardware VoIP are two branches of the same technological tree. Don't get me wrong I like Skype and use it regularly, but ultimately it doesn't pass the "mum test".
The Mum Test - Here at Voip Choice we are hoping to see VoIP evolve as a service that even my mum can use. Skype fails this test as it involves microphones, computers, and configuration.. all of which she has trouble with. Hardware based VoIP also fails this test mostly since there is no chance my mum could configure an ATA, but once configured, the service itself passes the test with flying colours... pick up the phone and talk.
Stay tuned this summer as we keep you up to date with more VoIP news, the ever-popular plan comparisons, and user reviews. If you have any questions please email us via the contact page or use the forums and we will endeavor to answer your questions!
